As a newly appointed middle school principal in a small town, Hannah Gardner wonders if there is a manual for leading an organization using head, heart, and spirit. Her life changes when Dr. Maddy Mathews, a recently retired superintendent from a neighboring district, is hired as interim superintendent. Once on board, Maddy sees that a great divide exists among the board members. An unscrupulous middle school coach—the town’s former football hero—has been promised Hannah’s position once he completes the certification requirements. Maddy, however, sees Hannah’s outstanding character and high ideals, combined with compassion for her students and staff, and decides to mentor her. Their weekly conversations ignite conceptual thinking and greater awareness as Hannah learns to trust her inner voice. Maddy not only mentors Hannah, but also works with all the administrators to foster change in a place where power has been misused. By introducing three leadership models, as well as the three Cs, the administrators explore new paradigms to balance work and play, embracing the next generation of student mastery. Throughout the school year, the relationship between Hannah and her mentor reveals the challenges and opportunities of leading a school district with love, while addressing political, social, and personal issues that require courage, integrity, and candor.

Gary Gunkel tells about his real-life experiences as a US Marine, an Anchorage City Policeman, an Alaska State Trooper, Chief of Police in small town Alaska and Sheriff of Asotin County, Washington. His stories are guaranteed to keep you turning the pages on call after call, and his sometimes hair-raising law enforcement experiences will keep you on the edge of your seat. And just when you think you have heard it all there will be another call that you can’t imagine. You will discover how Gary handles a dangerous situation surrounded by 24 members of a motorcycle gang with the nearest backup over 200 miles away. Another time you will feel the experience of stopping 17 gang members on a main highway because they were displaying a sawed off shotgun. The amazing thing is all these calls are real life...there is no fiction involved. Gary has, on occasion, changed a name to protect someone’s privacy, or sometimes a name is left out because he cannot recall it or has no way of getting the name. You will experience commercial fishing with his whole family for salmon in Bristol Bay and flying loads of fish off the beach in his plane. You will read about several live action and near-death aircraft incidents that you cannot believe happened to Gary and his family. He writes about bush flying experiences that will make you laugh, and some truly whacko ones that will make you shake your head as you go fishing, trapping and hunting with him. And through it all, you will come away with the understanding that everything Gary Gunkel did in law enforcement was professional, that he has a huge capacity for living life completely, and great love for his family.

Enriched by the wealth of new research into women's history, No Small Courage offers a lively chronicle of American experience, charting women's lives and experiences with fascinating immediacy from the precolonial era to the present. Individual stories and primary sources-including letters, diaries, and news reports-animate this history of the domestic, professional, and political efforts of American women. John Demos begins the book with a discussion of Native American women confronting colonization. Leading historians illuminate subsequent eras of social and political change-including Jane Kamensky on women's lives in the colonial period, Karen Manners Smith on the rising tide of political activity by women in the Progressive Era, Sarah Jane Deutsch on the transition of 1920s optimism to the harsh realities of the Great Depression, Elaine Tyler May on the challenges to a gender-defined social order encouraged by World War II, and William H. Chafe on the women's movement and the struggle for political equality since the 1960s. The authors vividly relate such events as Anne Hutchinson's struggle for religious expression in Puritan Massachusetts, former slave Harriet Tubman's perilous efforts to free others in captivity, Rosa Parks's resistance to segregation in the South, and newfound opportunities for professional and personal self-determination available as a result of decades of protest. Dozens of archival illustrations add to the human dimensions of the authoritative text. No Small Courage dynamically captures the variety and significance of American women's experience, demonstrating that the history of our nation cannot be fully understood without focusing on changes in women's lives.
